The Innocent Woman

Cast: Park So-hyun, Kim Gap-soo, Lee Si-hwan, Choi Hwan-jun

Korean society is increasingly becoming matrilineal, with more women holding a high social status, record-low birthrates and a shift of the leadership role in family from husband to wife and from the paternal side to the maternal one. This drama introduces a new family type that centers on women. Its main character -- a widow -- wins the battle against social prejudice. People blame her strong personality for her husband’s death but she proves to them that women who go through the pain of losing their husbands gain a more profound understanding of life and can better understand the pain of others. The drama shows that women who go through an ordeal have the ability to embrace other people in pain even in the face of prejudice and forgive those who hurt them.

Baek Il-hong : Her name, meaning “crape myrtle,” was given to her by her father who always taught her that fidelity is of prior importance to a woman. She has a pure-hearted personality to the extent that she gathers trash but she has no greed whatsoever. She wholeheartedly trusts people and once she develops affection for someone she trusts them till the very end. That’s why her heart is scarred severely, but she also has a powerful weapon --- her smile. She smiles when she feels sorry, when she is thankful and when she is in despair. She even smiles when she weeps. Her smiling face looks charming but it also makes an impression that she could be out of her mind.

Seo Jun-man : He graduated from a top-tier university because he didn’t want to live in poverty. One day he takes charge of the construction of a furniture company for a famous craftsman who notices his excellent work skills and offers him to work together with the ultimate goal of leaving his business to Jun-man. He introduces to him his daughter, Deok-hee, as his potential wife, but Deok-hee and her mother ignore Jun-man’s impoverished parents and value money above everything else. Despite his trustworthy impression, Jun-man looks too naive when he smiles. He speaks slowly and has a very meticulous and law-abiding personality but his indecisiveness is hard to endure.

Cha Seung-pyo : A CEO of an interior decoration company, Seung-pyo is well known in the industry for creating impressive displays of model houses, which also boosted his company’s share prices. He has graduated from a top-tier domestic university and earned his master’s degree in furniture design in the U.K. He is fastidious to the extent that he gets rid of everything he is sick of and never eats anything that is not to his liking. He can’t stand people who are blinded by love and hates when people downplay their mistakes. He believes that nothing in life is trivial. He is selfish and has no consideration for others whatsoever. He is adept at hurting people but he behaves like a real gentleman at business meetings because he is eager to succeed.

Chang Nam-ki : Half of the world’s population is women. As long as naive women exist, Nam-ki’s life will go on. His sense of smell is extremely sensitive, especially when it comes to the smell of money. This brazen-faced guy can get anything he wants. He lies 99 percent of the time, while the remaining one percent is not trustworthy, either. Having his good looks, he wears luxury clothes from head to toe but they are all fake. He doesn’t feel remorse for soaking women and not giving anything back, but he is keen to repay Il-hong.
